A 62 year old woman who had had 14 surgeries by many different surgeons. She had implants placed, removed, revised, along with many fusions. She was in such chronic pain that her pain doctor wanted to implant a morphine pump. She was sent to Dr. Babat to have a “hole drilled in my spine,” so that the pump could be placed, as her entire spine was a solid piece of fused bone. She was unable to stand up. Dr. Babat performed a pedicle subtraction osteotomy as part of her spinal reconstruction, and she is now upright and no longer requires and pain medication stronger than Tylenol.
